Tofu Totoro Musubi
A few weeks ago I ran across this fabulous YouTube video on how to make Spam Musubi Totoros. It inspired me to try making them with slabs of extra firm tofu instead and this was the result! Except...I didn't have enough nori left to make the bands of the musubi. But I loved how the Totoros turned out. I made four of them and since only two would fit into A-chan's bento I got to eat the leftovers for lunch. Yummy!
In the bento: Tofu totoros, rectangular onigiri (hidden under the totoros completely), raspberries, steamed broccoli, pineapple, carrot acorns and some frozen blueberries.
To make the totoro shapes I traced the bento box on a piece of paper, then divided it into two rectangles. I drew a rough totoro shape in each rectangle. With a piece of saran wrap between the drained slices of tofu and the paper template I used my handy dandy exacto knife to cut out the totoros. They were then cooked in a skillet with a mixture of sesame oil, soy sauce and mirin as I tried to get a spam-ish color from them. The white parts were all white egg sheet, the black details were nori (of course) and the whiskers were uncooked soba noodles. Getting the soba noodles to stick up at the correct angles was actually the most difficult part. Tiny egg sheet flowers were stuck to the steamed broccoli with more uncooked soba.

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween! Samhain Sona! Today started out with a beautiful sunrise and warm temperatures. I've got my fingers crossed that it will be a temperate night for Trick or Treating. This is my first time trying to make a witch onigiri. I think she is cute. The hat was more difficult than expected and I ended up rushing through bits so that we could leave early for school. Part of the difficulty was the bandaged finger that I was using very gingerly this morning. As we started carving Jack'o'lanterns last night I made a long speech about knife safety to A-chan and then immediately stabbed myself in the finger while cutting my pumpkin. After my impromptu demonstration of what not to do A-chan was very careful indeed!
In the bento: Onigiri witch and hat, grapes, a few blueberries, carrot stars and turnip stars, steamed broccoli, fried tofu, a checkered apple, sauteed squash and a carrot jack'o'lantern.
The Witch has a very thick egg sheet for hair. It is pinned in place around the backside of the onigiri with uncooked soba noodles. The main part of the hat was an onigiri wrapped in nori. The hat brim was a large sheet of provolone cheese that was covered in nori and pinned in place with more soba noodles. I used blue egg sheet for the hat's decoration along with some little stars.
I can't wait to steal some of A-chan's candy tonight once she's asleep. I wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween night!

Highland Dance
This weekend is A-chan's first Scottish Highland Dance competition. She's both excited and nervous. I'm totally exuberant! The Highland Games are always fun. I mean what's not fun about bagpipes, kilts and lovely, yummy scones? Plus it's an excuse to make Scottish Forfar Bridies for our bento lunches during the weekend. Ghillies (Highland dance shoes) are one of the main icons of the Scottish dancer so I decided to make this bento to cheer A-chan on. I wish that I'd made them a wee bit smaller, but otherwise I love how they turned out! You can see bits of our clan tartan and badge in the background. And of course I had to include a couple of plaid picks for the occasion.
In the bento: Veggie fried rice, raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, steamed broccoli and carrot flowers.
The ghillies were cut from white egg sheets. Nori designs were cut out with scissors and then were applied directly to the egg sheet. See all those strangely cut pieces of carrot in the fried rice? That's what I do with the bits of veggies left over from cutting out flowers, etc. They get frozen and then used in fried rice and soups.

Cheerful Jack o'Lanterns
Thank goodness fall is here! Cooler weather, falling leaves, acorns and pumpkins are some of my favorite things. We were a bit late with the Halloween decorating this year, finally getting it done this past weekend. And I've been behind in making Halloween themed bentos too. I spent the last two weeks without my computer again (can you say 'torture'?) and so I've missed two whole weeks putting up photos of my favorite holiday lunches. To make up for that, I'm posting this horrible Jack'o'lantern pancake bento even though the edges of the face cut-outs are so awful and ragged looking.
When you are using exacto knives to cut food it's necessary to replace the blades every so often as they tend to go dull very quickly, not being made for slicing through things like pancakes and egg sheet every day. Mine obviously needed replacing but I keep forgetting to go and buy a new set of replacement blades. Today's bento is a very strong reminder for me to go shopping!
In the bento: Miniature pancakes with cake icing, cucumber slices, carrots, cheese slices, french fries, dragonfruit, raspberries and blueberries.
The pancakes were frozen and took only 5 minutes to cook. I cut out the facial features with my way too dull exacto knife. The strawberry flavored cake icing was spread in a thin layer between the pancakes to make them sweet and make the faces pop at the same time. Some thin slices of green onion helped them look like proper Jack'o'lanterns with stems and a couple of candy-themed picks finished it off. The raspberries were fresh but the blueberries were frozen and popped into the bento just a moment before I snapped the picture.

Doo Bee Doo Bee Doo Bah
As Agent P's shield says, it's only two days til vacation! One of the things A-chan is very excited about it the Agent P adventure at Epcot. That will probably be the very first thing we do. When I'd planned out this bento in my head a whole lot more letters fit on the banner, but reality left me with only a small part of the theme song. A-chan started singing it as soon as she saw her bento and we both sang Perry's theme song in the car on the way to school this morning.
In the bento: Rice, baby corn, frozen blueberries, a cherry tomato, steamed broccoli and Japanese curry.
Agent P was constructed from blue, white and orange egg sheets with some soy turkey for his hat and eyes. His shield and theme song banner were cut from provolone cheese and carrots.
To make the character I first traced the outside of the bento box, then traced the size of the inside container. Then I drew Agent P on the inside of the box. Next I cut him out as one large shape, traced him on another piece in order to have two copies to work with. The first Agent P was then cut into his various parts: Hat, eyes, bill, shield. One large Agent P was cut out of egg sheet and then all the other bits were cut and assembled with some mayo on the backs to help keep the pieces glued in place.
Agent P is copyrighted to the Disney co. (Is copyrighted a word? It doesn't sound right...)

Ladybug Bento
Gah, where did the summer go? It went by in a blur of travel, classes and craziness. Neither of us are ready for summer to be over and I'm enjoying looking through the summer camp bentos to help hold onto summer as long as possible.
This ladybug bento was another of those summer camp lunches. I don't use the bright yellow Pikachu box much these days since A-chan is not as interested in Pokemon, but I do love how it makes the red of the food pop out.
In the bento: Chilled zaru soba noodles, cherry tomato ladybug, carrot flowers with pear peel leaves in the large tier. The smaller tier holds pear slices, a strawberry, blueberries, half an apricot, steamed broccoli and Shoyu tofu on picks. Not shown: a container of sauce for the noodles.
The ladybug has a blueberry head which is attached to the cherry tomato half with a fried spaghetti noodle. Her eyes are cut from pear with nori details and her antennae are uncooked soba noodles. I adore how the center of the blueberry looked like a nose! Nori was applied to the tomato with a bit of water to help the pieces stick.

Sweet Lamb
It's been a while since I've done any blogging and I was a little worried that I wouldn't remember how! I'm grateful to have a new computer so that the internet and I can be playmates again. It is doubtful that I can catch up on all the bentos that I've missed seeing during the last few months, but I'm going to try, darn it.
This lamb bento was made for one of A-chan's summer camp days. As always, summer camp lunches need to be simple because they get tossed into a huge plastic container and carried around the camp. Anything with complex characters tends to be a huge mess by lunchtime.
In the bento: Rice lamb with egg sheet face, ears and feet. His eyes and mouth are nori and his cheeks are tiny buds from a raspberry. He has carrot letters, a side of soy sauce tofu hearts with nori centers, steamed edamame, raspberries and blueberries.
The strange tofu shapes that were left over from cutting out the hearts were also cooked and are hidden underneath the hearts.

Sweet Teddy Bear
We are in full swing getting ready for JapanFest tomorrow! It is going to be so much fun and I am so excited. And I even managed to fit the table in the car all by myself. Go me! To celebrate the upcoming fun I made this cute onigiri teddy bear. Nothing says happy like a smiling teddy bear, right?
Both of us are hoping to purchase some of our favorite Japanese sweets tomorrow: Mochi for A-chan and Dango for me. I'm particularly looking forward to the Archery demonstrations as well.
In the bento: Lots of onigiri, carrot flowers, steamed broccoli, chickpeas, nectarine slices, frozen blueberries, strawberries and baby corn.
To make the body of the teddy I mixed scrambled tofu into the rice before making the onigiri. Then I added two whole cloves for the buttons, making sure that A-chan knew to remove them before eating the onigiri. The head and paws are just plain rice. The facial features were cut from soy turkey slices, provolone cheese and nori with a few black sesame seeds for cute eyelashes. Her cheeks were painted on with strawberry jam. The jam might be a little weird but it seemed like a good idea at 6 am, as though jam is somehow cuter than sriracha!

After DragonCon Bento
It was the morning after DragonCon and few groceries were in the house. The worst bento transgression was about to occur for we had no fruit! It pained me greatly but still I labored to put one together, swearing to shop just as soon as I could. Instead of lettuce to line and to cushion I cut apart muffin cups and used them where needed. What a wonderful time we had at that pinnacle of Conventions, meeting lots of great people hither and yon. Much thanks to all those who attended my classes, I had a fantastic time and I hope that you did as well!
In the bento: Peanut butter and sugar sprinkle sandwiches, steamed broccoli, baby tomatoes on Kappa picks, baby carrots, cheddar cheese chunks and the tiny chick container of frozen blueberries which was all the fruit I could find.
It was a fantastic convention and we loved every minute and we can't wait for next year! We dressed up in several different costumes. Here are a couple of pics of our matching Victorian outfits.
It's always a difficult transition to come home after an amazing event and I made the mistake of forgetting to stop for groceries. Luckily we had enough food on hand to make a bento but I was a little nervous for a while this morning. In the background is A-chan's snack container filled with the last few Cheetos that we had left over from our junk food stash in the hotel room.

Butterflies and Tulips
Yesterday was my birthday. It was a wonderful day and I enjoyed every moment! My birthday present to myself was a new bento box from Bento & Co. which I can't wait to try out. Expect an excited post with a review tomorrow. This bento was quick and easy to put together except for the black sesame seeds which were not nearly as simple as I expected.
In the bento: Rice with egg sheet butterflies and carrot tulips, a container of sauteed tofu, sesame carrots, pomegranates, blueberries, grapes, and plums.
The small flowers were cut from egg sheet and plum peel and the leaves were cut from spinach with scissors. Since I've also been going to school I have been making bentos for myself. Here is my first umeboshi bento!
In the bento: Rice, homemade vegetarian meatballs with carrot stars, clementine wedge, steamed green beans, Japanese sweet potato slices, grapes and a container of squash and green peas. Instead of my usual lettuce baran I used folded over spinach leaves.

Boy 'n' Girl Bento
Pierogies are easy to make into fun bento pals. These are potato and onion pierogies that were first boiled and then pan fried in a little bit of butter, yum! I'm not very happy with how the clementine turned out. The idea was to provide a start for A-chan to peel it herself. My exacto knife met with a horrible rusty end over the summer though, so I had to try and cut the peel design with a regular knife. Hmm. Yeah, need a new exacto knife asap!
In the bento: Two pierogies, green peas on picks, steamed broccoli, tiny clementine, pomegranate seeds and blueberries, veggie hot dogs.
This is definitely The Week of the Egg Sheet! The boy and girl have hair cut from egg sheets, including the flowers on her ponytails. Their faces were punched from nori. I love how the veggie hot dogs look! After they were cooked, I used a tiny heart shaped cutter for the centers and while it was still in place used a knife to cut around it to create the vertical slices.

Acorn Sammies
Whew! I am so happy to be back to posting. My sickness is finally over and I am human again with only a little bit of coughing and no fever :) Last week was rough. This week is exciting though - today is my first day of school! And we're going to San Jose, CA later in the week. I would love suggestions about things to do while we're out that way.
In the bento: Acorn sandwiches filled with peanut butter and sugar sprinkles, blueberries on picks, an apple bunny, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli and a container of carrot hearts.
The acorn sammies were cut with a Wilton cookie cutter. Their cute caps were cut from the heel of the loaf and I used scissors to shape them to the right size. My carrot peeler was dirty this morning (I have a huge backlog of cleaning to attend to from being sick all last week) so I cut slices without peeling the carrot and then used a tiny heart shaped cutter to cut from the centers. The rest of the carrot got scooped up to go into the compost, peel and all.
Happy Monday, everyone!

A Funny Bao
One of our favorite things to buy at Super H mart are sweet potato bao. We buy them frozen and save them for treats and fun bentos. The outside is a mix of pink and purple and is so soft when they are steamed, just perfection! Spring is here, the sun is shining, birds are tweeting up a storm outside so today is a perfect day for a little sweet potato treat.
In the bento: Sweet potato bao, steamed broccoli, half a cherry tomato, tofu and edamame on a pick, blueberries and orange slices.
Taking inspiration from Sherimiya's bao creativity, I cut the ears from the top layer of the bao using an exacto knife. It wasn't as easy as I'd thought it would be! The eyes, nose and mouth are provolone and nori, the cheeks are soy bologna. Simple, tasty and fun :)

My Friend Hello Kitty
It is possible to make a bento using only one hand. Barely. With a bunch of cheating. Using my left hand for things has been an adventure today! If anyone ever tells you thumbs are over rated, don't believe them. Since I am impaired I fell back on my favorite bento character to decorate A-chan's lunch today.
In the bento: Two cheese sandwiches, steamed broccoli, apple heart, blueberries on a pick, veggie hot dog, baby carrots and a cherry tomato.
Hello Kitty is made from provolone cheese, nori and a veggie hot dog bow. The tools make it very easy to create Hello Kitty and I love the way she makes A-chan smile.

Singing Friends
Wow ~ this morning was tough! Spring break was wonderful but the return to reality is just so...realistic. Today's bento was very simple to make and nice for my poor muddled sleepy brain to figure out because I'd remembered to plan the night before, yay me!
In the bento: Three inari zushi, a cherry tomato, two picks with blueberries, kabocha, steamed broccoli, strawberries and orange slices.
In the past I've recommended cooking the kabocha and the inari skins in the same pot because they are both very yummy using the same ingredients. However, I can't recall if I've said which order to cook them in. Definitely cook the kabocha first and then add the inari after the kabocha pieces are removed. This morning's mixture was my favorite flavorings: water, soy sauce, mirin, brown sugar.
The middle inari has cooked kabocha mashed and mixed into the rice. I think it tasted divine and hope that A-chan thinks the same.

Friday Onigiri
After all the hearts yesterday I decided to do a bento classic for today and made happy onigiri because it's Friday! This weekend is going to be pretty busy with A-chan's Taekwondo sparring camp and me going to dance rehearsals for a show in Feb. I'm making our plans into excuses to make weekend bentos.
In the bento: Two round and happy onigiri, orange slices, a container of blueberries with a pink hedgehog pick, a baby tomato and a bread 'bowl' filled with tofu, carrot and broccoli stirfry.
The onigiri faces were punched out of nori except for the cheeks which were cut from gari. The pretty bow was painstakingly cut from lemon peel and orange peel using the exacto knife, which was more difficult than I expected.
Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

A Heart-full bento
This bento turned out to have a theme, though I didn't know it until I was taking the picture. Hmm. I guess it's almost Valentine's Day! Oh boy, we get to make chocolates! A-chan is already gushing about the chocolate making tradition and has started counting down the days. I was informed this morning at breakfast that there are only 19 days til Valentine's.
In the bento: A heart shaped container filled with chickpeas and feta, steamed broccoli, baby carrots, two bamboo picks with veggie hot dog slices and provolone cheese hearts, a lemon slice, two potato and cheese pierogies, pear slices, blueberries and a tiny tomato on a heart pick.
I find it difficult to make the heart shaped container fit into my bentos so it usually sits unused in my bento gear box. However, this bento was designed around it! It was the first thing to go in and I worked everything else around it.

Favorite Things
There are very few bentos where I don't use a container of some kind. They are so useful! I love them for fruit, stirfry and cheese. Today I used my absolute favorite container to pack black eyed peas. The peas are a bit juicy and this container with its lid is perfect for things that might lead to a sloppy messy bento disaster otherwise.
In the bento: The smaller tier holds plain spaghetti noodles, a tomato flower and pear leaf. The larger tier contains the panda with black eyed peas, Morningstar Farms chik nuggets, carrot flowers, steamed broccoli, orange slices and panda picks with blueberries.
Not shown are a small bottle full of grated Parmesan cheese, a container of ketchup and a soy sauce bottle.
Here is my new fun thing! I'm calling it the Bento Treasures link-up. I want to know what container is your favorite. Link -up to a picture of a bento with your favorite container in use. It can be one of your bentos, it can be one of my bentos. It can be someone else's bento (as long as there is proper attribution, of course). If you don't make bentos or don't own any containers yet, show me a container that you'd like to have. I'll have a new theme for the next four weeks. Let's find out more about our bento obsession!

Where is the Sun?
A children's book inspired today's bento. 'How the Sun was Brought Back to the Sky' by Mirra Ginsburg was published in 1975, the year I was born. We found our copy at Mr. Reed's Odds and Ends Antique store. It's pretty much out in the middle of nowhere and filled with all kinds of things. I like to describe it as a giant treasure trove. In this sweet book some intrepid chicks decide that the sun has been gone for too long and go on an adventure to find it. My thoughts on getting out of bed this morning mirrored theirs. It's been raining for days and days - I need some sunshine!
In the bento: Tofu kaarage, blueberries, a tiny tomato, steamed broccoli, navel orange slices, rice with furikake, eggsheet chicks and flowers.
The tofu kaarage is adapted from a recipe for Chicken Kaarage on Just Hungry. My camera seemed to love the tofu as much as I do - every shot that I took this morning was focused on the tofu instead of the chicks! The furikake is one that I made from toasted sesame seeds, sea salt and tarragon. And I even managed to have enough space for one of the new soy sauce bottles that I got at Christmas!
This post is my 400th bento post! That is a lot of bentos :D A while back I noticed that this big number was coming up and gave a lot of thought to a way to celebrate. What I want is to start doing a link-up that focuses on our favorite things about bentos. There are a lot of other bento peeps out there that I would love to know more about - what are your bento treasures? Unfortunately I'm not feeling very good today so I'm going to start this whole new adventure tomorrow when I'm certain that I can be more coherent.

Fruit in a Bear
Isn't it cute? The box, I mean. Pizza day was the best excuse to pop out my new bento box and give it a whirl. It's the Kuma White Donburi from Bento and Co. Dude, it's a deep bento box! Those aren't orange wedges they are half slices. Half a black plum fit alongside the oranges. Some might call the lemon wedges citrus overload with all the orange slices, but I wanted something to fit perfectly in that tight curve. The side container holds a ton of blueberries and pomegranate seeds.
In the bento: (Hmmm, I think I've already told you everything, but oh well!) Lemon wedges, half orange slices, black plum chunks, blueberries and pomegranate seeds. There are a few provolone cheese stars and a strawberry divider because it went with the fruit theme and made things cuter.
You may have noticed that the blueberry/pomegranate seeds combination has been going on all week. That is usually part of how I plan my bentos - A-chan chooses two fruits and then I combine them in different ways all week. Only...there aren't a lot of ways to combine blueberries and pomegranate seeds. They do look pretty jumbled together in a container, though!
Happy Friday everyone!
