Box Turtle Bento

This bento was in honor of the box turtle that we found next to our recycling bin a couple of weeks ago. We kept her for two days and learned a lot about box turtles, including the fact that they are actually very good climbers! Then we released her back into the wilderness near where we found her. It was an incredible experience.

In the bento: Turtle shaped onigiri, sauteed tofu, tiny carrot flowers, grapes, black olives and an apple piece with a carved heart.

The designs on the turtle's shell were made from nori and soy turkey.

Do you have any ideas for a vegitarian onigiri tht doesnt use seaweed??? our stores in town dont offer it and they wont order any either :( Onigiri is the main part of the bento and it will really suck if i cant make one :(

Ha, the real thing was much much cuter I promise! I couldn't get the detail that I wanted with the nori :) Thank you, Sheri!

Wow, thanks Raiziel! Bentos are so much fun, you should definitely try it. Remember that it takes practice to make them look exactly how you want them - my first bentos were not nearly as pretty as the ones I make now, lol.

You can definitely make onigiri without the seaweed! You can use almost anything for decoration and attach it to the onigiri with mayo or honey or jelly...I've used soy turkey, cheese, carrot, peas, spaghetti noodles. It just takes some experimenting to find out what works best for you.
