Sweet Teddy Bear
We are in full swing getting ready for JapanFest tomorrow! It is going to be so much fun and I am so excited. And I even managed to fit the table in the car all by myself. Go me! To celebrate the upcoming fun I made this cute onigiri teddy bear. Nothing says happy like a smiling teddy bear, right?
Both of us are hoping to purchase some of our favorite Japanese sweets tomorrow: Mochi for A-chan and Dango for me. I'm particularly looking forward to the Archery demonstrations as well.
In the bento: Lots of onigiri, carrot flowers, steamed broccoli, chickpeas, nectarine slices, frozen blueberries, strawberries and baby corn.
To make the body of the teddy I mixed scrambled tofu into the rice before making the onigiri. Then I added two whole cloves for the buttons, making sure that A-chan knew to remove them before eating the onigiri. The head and paws are just plain rice. The facial features were cut from soy turkey slices, provolone cheese and nori with a few black sesame seeds for cute eyelashes. Her cheeks were painted on with strawberry jam. The jam might be a little weird but it seemed like a good idea at 6 am, as though jam is somehow cuter than sriracha!

Fried Rice for Camp
Have you ever looked at a word, one that is very familiar, and been totally convinced that you'd spelled it incorrectly? The word 'summer' went all wonky on me this morning. It just looked wrong! Ah, well. I would attribute it to heat stroke except that it hasn't been very hot at all.
In the bento: Veggie fried rice, a huge cherry tomato, peach slices, grapes, pickled cucumber slices and black olives.
This bento is another one from last week's summer camp which A-chan absolutely adored. Again, I kept it very simple. The fried rice has green peas, roughly cut carrots, onions and scrambled tofu mixed into it. I put a little too much soy sauce in the rice as I fried it, so it ended up more brown than normal. It seemed overkill to put in a soy sauce bottle with her bento, lol.

Time to Plant Yet?
Spring is being confusing this year. The weather won't make up it's mind. It is way too cold to be almost May! Georgia is supposed to be warm and comfy this time of year and instead I'm freezing. I want to start planting. When do I get to play with flowers?
In the bento: Two onigiri with scrambled tofu, purple potato flowers, cherry tomato, pistachios, carrot flower, steamed broccoli and chunks of mango.
The potato flowers are decorated with sesame seeds and have cucumber peel leaves. I used a knife to slice the cucumber peel from the cucumber and then used scissors to cut the leaves. The letters were cut from egg sheet leftover after making the Cupcake Kitty. Have I mentioned lately that I adore my letter cutters? The thought of trying to cut them out by hand sends shivers down my spine.
Making scrambled tofu onigiri is very easy, however since the tofu is colored using tumeric the yellow gets all over the rice when mixing them together. The end result is not as striking compared to using scrambled egg.

Earth Day
Over the years the idea of Earth Day has gotten slightly muddled in my head. Recycling and being environmentally conscious are things that are completely ingrained in daily life. And of course, one of the best ways (in my opinion, lol) of being Green is to pack waste-free bento lunches! So what does Earth Day mean to me now? Hmm. My wish for Earth Day is peace. War harms the planet and all the creatures that live on it, big and small. I will honor everything that lives on Earth this Sunday: plant, animal and human. I will think about peace and wonder what it would be like if the nations of the world concentrated on preserving life on Earth.
In the bento: Scrambled tofu, green peas and sesame carrots on top of a bed of rice, a black olive on a bamboo pick, strawberry halves, mango chunks, mulberries and a peaceful Babybel cheese.

Hot dog mouse
The cute little mouse hiding in this bento was inspired by Maki Ogawa at Cute Obento. Her amazingly cute hot dog and sausage characters have been making me oooh and aaah for years! I haven't been able to come close to creating the cuteness that she does, but her tutorials and creative ideas keep me trying.
In the bento: Vegetarian hot dog mouse, cherry tomato halves, grapes on heart picks, steamed broccoli, vegetable fried rice with baby corn, green peas, carrots, onion, scrambled tofu and shitake mushrooms.
Half of a hot dog makes the mouse. There is a wedge cut out to allow room for his ears which are just hot dog slices with provolone cheese centers. His mouth is a provolone cheese heart with a tiny pink sugar dot for a nose. He has a little tail but I don't know if it's really visible against the tomato.
We're off to the Georgia Aquarium for today's adventure. I'm looking forward to it, especially spending some time watching the Beluga whales which are my favorite! A-chan is excited about petting the sharks and rays, she thinks she's tall enough to reach into the petting tank now. (I sure hope so!)

Two Bentos for the Price of One
One of our kitties has been very ill. He had surgery to remove the tumor yesterday after two days of everyone freaking out in panic over it. In celebration of his recovery you get two bentos today. That's right, you get two bento pics today! I've been away for three days - but I'm not giving you three pics at once, let's not get crazy here.
In the top bento: A cherry tomato, steamed zucchini slices, pan fried tofu and green peas on picks, an apple bunny, blackberries, carrot stars, rice with furikake and cute little icecream cones.
The cones were cut from soy turkey slices with a triangular shaped cutter. The icecream scoops were cut from apple peel and provolone cheese with a ufo shaped cutter. Tiny circles were cut from strawberries with my food scissors and tiny leaf shapes were cut from lettuce with scissors as well. Their faces were punched from nori. The special cutters that I used are from the space cutter set and were bought from Ohayo Bento's store.

In the second bento: Sesame carrots, steamed green peas and scrambled tofu on a bed of steamed rice, blackberries, starfruit and a huge cherry tomato.
Both of these cherry tomatoes were cut in half after the pictures were taken. Dangerous school lunch eye injuries can be avoided by prudent tomato cutting techniques! Tomato juice at high velocity is never fun.
Happy Friday, everyone! I hope that you have a fantastic weekend!

The Bento of Blah
During the summer all that I could see out the living room windows was a stretching canopy of green. Today there is blue sky showing through the tree limbs and bright orange leaves. Autumn is constantly amazing and inspiring. Today's bento, however, is a bit on the blah side. It is dreary and dull compared to yesterday's bentos. Even with a case of blahs it is healthy and tasty though!
In the bento: A layer of rice underneath the scrambled tofu, green peas and sesame carrots. In the blue container are chunks of feta, an elephant pick crowns a cherry tomato next to apple chunks and an apple star.
Provolone cheese hearts were cut with a heart shaped cutter. The nori hearts were punched with a scrapbook punch from Hobby Lobby.
The new kitten has been officially named Midnight, though I usually find myself calling her Little Bit. She is ever so cute and finally getting used to us.
