Because it's time for Fall
There is a definite chill in the air which means that it's time for Pumpkin flavored everything, warm socks and the 'poing' sound of acorns pelting the car roof. After so many years of making bento lunches some trends have shown up. Fall = Totoro. It has now become an official household tradition that the first fall bento includes Totoro.
In the bento: Totoro onigiri with black sesame seeds, black olives, strawberries, corn on the cob, clementine slices, a huge carrot leaf, steamed edamame and vegetarian hotdogs.
Totoro has black sesame seeds mixed in with the rice for a grayish color. His belly and eyes are of provolone cheese and nori, but his nose was cut from a black olive. The ears were made separately and are affixed to his head with uncooked udon noodles. A-chan said that she though he looked more like a bunny than Totoro, but he was still cute so it's okay.
There was a lot of hidden food in this bento. To get the corn perfect looking I cut off a ragged end but put it underneath Totoro to angle him up a little. Another strawberry and clementine slice were underneath the fruit and more steamed edamame were crammed around under the black olive soot sprites.

Tofu Totoro Musubi
A few weeks ago I ran across this fabulous YouTube video on how to make Spam Musubi Totoros. It inspired me to try making them with slabs of extra firm tofu instead and this was the result! Except...I didn't have enough nori left to make the bands of the musubi. But I loved how the Totoros turned out. I made four of them and since only two would fit into A-chan's bento I got to eat the leftovers for lunch. Yummy!
In the bento: Tofu totoros, rectangular onigiri (hidden under the totoros completely), raspberries, steamed broccoli, pineapple, carrot acorns and some frozen blueberries.
To make the totoro shapes I traced the bento box on a piece of paper, then divided it into two rectangles. I drew a rough totoro shape in each rectangle. With a piece of saran wrap between the drained slices of tofu and the paper template I used my handy dandy exacto knife to cut out the totoros. They were then cooked in a skillet with a mixture of sesame oil, soy sauce and mirin as I tried to get a spam-ish color from them. The white parts were all white egg sheet, the black details were nori (of course) and the whiskers were uncooked soba noodles. Getting the soba noodles to stick up at the correct angles was actually the most difficult part. Tiny egg sheet flowers were stuck to the steamed broccoli with more uncooked soba.

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween! Samhain Sona! Today started out with a beautiful sunrise and warm temperatures. I've got my fingers crossed that it will be a temperate night for Trick or Treating. This is my first time trying to make a witch onigiri. I think she is cute. The hat was more difficult than expected and I ended up rushing through bits so that we could leave early for school. Part of the difficulty was the bandaged finger that I was using very gingerly this morning. As we started carving Jack'o'lanterns last night I made a long speech about knife safety to A-chan and then immediately stabbed myself in the finger while cutting my pumpkin. After my impromptu demonstration of what not to do A-chan was very careful indeed!
In the bento: Onigiri witch and hat, grapes, a few blueberries, carrot stars and turnip stars, steamed broccoli, fried tofu, a checkered apple, sauteed squash and a carrot jack'o'lantern.
The Witch has a very thick egg sheet for hair. It is pinned in place around the backside of the onigiri with uncooked soba noodles. The main part of the hat was an onigiri wrapped in nori. The hat brim was a large sheet of provolone cheese that was covered in nori and pinned in place with more soba noodles. I used blue egg sheet for the hat's decoration along with some little stars.
I can't wait to steal some of A-chan's candy tonight once she's asleep. I wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween night!

Dango? Why yes, thanks!
Do you have a favorite food that you don't get to eat often? Mine is dango! It is definitely a special treat and only happens about twice a year. Whenever I'm in San Francisco I stop by the Japanese Tea Gardens and grab some tea and dango. I suppose that I could learn to make it at home, but I love having dango as a rare thing. That way it's something to look forward to for a month or so before a trip.
This dango bento just tickles me. One of my favorites paired with one of A-chan's. She adores soba. I like soba noodles, too. Just not as much as she does. Anyway, it was a lot of fun to make and a lot of fun for her to eat!
In the bento: Rice ball dango, soba noodles, carrot stars, steamed broccoli, crisp fried tofu and plum slices.
The dango rice balls were made by cooking three pots of rice - one plain, one with red food coloring and another with green. You might think making three colored batches of rice is crazy, but it actually is a greatly efficient way of filling up my freezer. It usually happens over a weekend and when each batch is done they are immediately made into onigiri and frozen to make morning bentos so much easier. But back to the bento deets...the faces were made from nori using two different punches, with sesame seeds added to the eyes and sriracha sauce for the cheeks. A piece of fried soba noodle makes the stick of the dango.

Froggies and Fireflies
JapanFest was the best thing since onigiri molds! We had a blast watching the sumo wrestling, taiko drumming and Bunraku puppetry, not to mention seeing all the smiling faces throughout the weekend. Thanks so much to all the people who came to the lectures and stopped by the booth. It's always a difficult transition back to normality after an exciting event, but we're trying our best. Silly frog onigiri were a great way to usher in the week.
In the bento: Frog onigiri, potato salad in a container, strawberries, lemon slices, steamed broccoli, a vegetarian tsukune patty, carrot and turnip flowers and a couple of nori dragonflies on cheese circles.
To get green rice I added a couple drops of food coloring to the water before cooking the rice. The onigiri shapes were made with an onigiri mold. Provolone cheese and nori were used for the facial detail. The frog's tongue was sweet potato peel. It was pretty simple to cut the dragonflies out of nori using a stencil punch from a local craft store.
I love using black sesame seeds for detail on flowers and things like the dragonflies' flight paths. Sesame seeds are extremely versatile, not to mention yummy!

Princess Merida
For the last bento before our trip A-chan requested Merida. Though she loves all the Disney Princesses, Merida is currently her favorite. She has been learning Scottish Highland Dance since January and mentioned yesterday that she wanted to do some dancing for Merida at Disney! There is a new fruit in this bento - dinosaur egg pluot. I couldn't pass up the chance to eat a fruit with a name like that. And I love it! It's a very nice pluot with a mostly sweet taste and luckily A-chan loves it.
With complicated character bentos I sketch out the designs the night before and often do most of the prep work then as well. In this case, the sketches, multiple egg sheets and the little bear onigiri were made the night before. I neglected to check the sizing of the bears, leaving them much too big to fit into the actual bento. A-chan claimed that she didn't mind if one got squished a little.
In the bento: Merida figure on top of a lovely block of rice, checkered apple, three bear onigiri, steamed broccoli, a cherry tomato (completely hidden under/behind the bears), garlic and basil encrusted tofu, baby corn spears and slices of dinosaur egg pluot.
Merida was made from (can you guess?) many layer of egg sheet and provolone. I'm sure that no one is surprised by that since those are my standard ingredients for charaben. I was excited about making the arrow and bow string, though. The arrow is an uncooked udon noodle and the bow string is the edging cut from a slice of soy turkey.
The three bears are onigiri made from fried rice with lots of extra soy sauce to get them a deep brown color. Soy turkey and nori were used for their faces. I should have made their faces a little differently, but I was too concerned with trying to make them all fit into the box!
The target that proclaims our count down to vacation was cut from provolone cheese, cucumber peel and carrot.

Edamame and Soba
There are some days when I'm extremely grateful for cute food picks. Without the little blue monkey this bento would not have passed the 'cute' test. Luckily A-chan was okay with it, though she considered the onigiri strawberry to be a bit strange. It looks pretty strange in the picture, I'll grant. It looked much nicer in person, I swear!
In the bento: Zaru soba noodles with steamed edamame, strawberry shaped onigiri with cucumber peel leaf, blackberries, apples, kiwi slices and a carrot flower with pea center.
Even if the bento wasn't the cutest ever, we both agreed that the boxes were adorable. I loved the fact that the container/cup that came in the snack box can be used with the larger box.

First Day Back to School
Summer is over too quickly. I can't believe that school is already starting! Where did summer go? In our house bento supplies are required back-to-school shopping. A-chan was excited to get two new bento boxes and matching snack boxes and I was thrilled to get a few small decorating items. It has been our tradition in the past for A-chan to request a special bento theme for the first day of school. This year she couldn't decide on anything and left it up to me. A mermaid seemed perfect since one of the most loved and most time-consuming activities of the summer was swim lessons.
In the bento: Pink rice mermaid onigiri, checkered cucumber, a huge cherry tomato, grape halves, sea themed biscuits, fried tofu, peach slices (hidden under the hair) and blackberries.
The mermaid's tail was cut from soy turkey slices and her hair was cut from an egg sheet. Tiny carrot flowers decorate her hair and bra. Sugar dots made a great pearl necklace. I used a nori punch for her eyes and mouth and then dabbed on a bit of ketchup for cheeks.
Now let me show you our new bento loot! A-chan loves taiyaki so getting the matching taiyaki set was a definite must. That set was a surprise. The skull boxes, however, she chose herself. They are not my taste, lol. She adores them - in part because they remind her of Monster High, I think.
Her old much-beloved bento bags were falling apart after being used continuously for two years and being washed a ton. So she begged me for the orange piggy bag.
And here is the thing I got just for me. Well, technically I will use it with her bentos. But it's really for me. Japanese letter cutouts! Sweet! I can't wait to start using these beautiful things. Of course, first I will have to learn a little more Japanese than I currently know. Can you see the carrot dangling in front of my face?

Beware the Vampires
Beware, beware the vampire pair
who are dread and dire.
For both be filled
with the desire
to feed on necks so fair.
Spelling homework can stick in a parent's head, that's for sure. Especially when the spelling words rhyme so nicely. These vampire onigiri were a tribute to the Dacula High School Anime Club. Thank you so much for inviting me to do a demo! I had a great time and enjoyed meeting all of you.
In the bento: Two vampire onigiri, steamed edamame in their pods, a carrot jack o'lantern, blackberries, a baby tomato, fried tofu and simmered kabocha.
The small ends of baby tomatoes were cut off to make the Vampire's eyes and were stuck onto the rice balls with tiny pieces of uncooked somen noodle. I used scissors to cut the nori into shape and used leftover bits of carrot from the jack o'lantern for the Vampire noses. White egg sheet made the background for my lovely bat which was cut from nori. A couple of bone shaped picks liven up the veggies.
On Nov. 3rd I will be vending at the Athens Montessori Fall Festival! A-chan might possibly be more excited than I am, but it's got to be a close tie.

Fall Colors
We noticed our first bit of Autumn color in the yard today. Hurray for Fall! This bento doesn't have anything to do with Fall. In fact, it was made about two weeks ago. However, it does have very happy onigiri in it. And it has plenty of our new favorite food - edamame. It keeps ending up in all kinds of new recipes. One might say that I have a crush on edamame, in fact.
In the bento: Two plain onigiri with happy faces and edamame decoration, baby tomatoes, nectarine slices, steamed broccoli and a container of stirfry that includes tofu, baby corn, carrots and edamame.
The onigiri eyes were punched out of nori but the smiles were hand cut with scissors. Their cheeks were strawberry jam applied with a toothpick. Tiny pieces of uncooked somen noodles help to attach the edamame to the onigiri.

JapanFest DayTwo
I can hardly believe how quickly this week has gone by. On Monday my face was sore from smiling so much over the weekend! Tuesday was entirely taken up with tests at school. Today there were more tests but they were outweighed by the beautiful blue skies and clear weather. Now that my exams are over I am able to finish up my posts about the wonderfulness of JapanFest! Everyone loved seeing A-chan's lunch so much on Saturday that I decided to make a bento just for display on Sunday. People's reactions to seeing the bentos in person were so sweet and it made me very happy.
In the bento: Two plain onigiri, an apple bunny, blackberries, edamame on a pick, tofu karaage, carrot stars and almost invisible in the back were steamed broccoli and tiny tomato halves.
The onigiri were very quickly formed with the use of a triangular rice mold. Their eyes were punched out of nori with a face shaped puncher, but the mouths were cut with scissors. I used the end of a toothpick to apply sriracha sauce to make the cheeks.
In addition to the display bento we each had lunch bentos. On Sunday A-chan's asthma was under control so she got to come along, yay! Her bento had the same contents as the display with the addition of some kiwi slices. Mine had Japanese curry instead of onigiri.
We had a fantastic time. One of her favorite things was seeing all the Koi. She also loved the games in the ginza.

JapanFest Day One
JapanFest was incredible. A-chan and I had a great time! I am extremely grateful to my two helpers, Andy and Lucci, without whom I would have been lost. To everyone who came to the presentation or stopped by the booth, thank you. It was lovely to meet all of you and get to spend time chatting with so many wonderfully nice people! I'm going to break up my post about JapanFest into two parts because otherwise it would be way too long. At the bottom of the post are a few pics from the first day.
On Saturday I had made A-chan a bento but her allergies had aggravated her asthma and she had to stay home with her grandma. She didn't get to eat the bento but I got to display her lunch at the booth instead which was very cool. Since I had made a white bear during the week I decided to make a brown bear for her to eat at the event.
In the bento: Fried rice onigiri bear, baby tomato on a panda pick, steamed cauliflower and broccoli, veggie hot dogs, baby corn spear, a strawberry, a carrot flower and some blackberries in a silicon container with a tiger pick.
To make the teddy bear I took a small portion of fried rice without veggies and made lots of little onigiri. Since the fried rice is a little oily I used saran wrap to form the onigiri and keep the oil from getting on my hands. His features were cut from provolone cheese and nori, stuck to his body with a tiny bit of mayo. The nose was a pick stuck through the cheese and into the rice ball. The vegetarian hot dogs were cooked before cutting the heart shapes with a tiny heart cutter.
The white teddy bear was awfully cute but I think that I prefer this one. Which one do you like better?

Sweet Teddy Bear
We are in full swing getting ready for JapanFest tomorrow! It is going to be so much fun and I am so excited. And I even managed to fit the table in the car all by myself. Go me! To celebrate the upcoming fun I made this cute onigiri teddy bear. Nothing says happy like a smiling teddy bear, right?
Both of us are hoping to purchase some of our favorite Japanese sweets tomorrow: Mochi for A-chan and Dango for me. I'm particularly looking forward to the Archery demonstrations as well.
In the bento: Lots of onigiri, carrot flowers, steamed broccoli, chickpeas, nectarine slices, frozen blueberries, strawberries and baby corn.
To make the body of the teddy I mixed scrambled tofu into the rice before making the onigiri. Then I added two whole cloves for the buttons, making sure that A-chan knew to remove them before eating the onigiri. The head and paws are just plain rice. The facial features were cut from soy turkey slices, provolone cheese and nori with a few black sesame seeds for cute eyelashes. Her cheeks were painted on with strawberry jam. The jam might be a little weird but it seemed like a good idea at 6 am, as though jam is somehow cuter than sriracha!

Froggy Faces
One of my absolute favorite things about bento tools is how a single basic shape can be transformed into so many different things. Take the frog onigiri above, for example. They were made with a teddy bear onigiri mold. I've used the same mold to make bears, pandas, racoons, frogs and a few other things. The tools certainly aren't necessary for bento making, but they can be so much fun and open up new realms of creative thinking!
In the bento: Two frog onigiri, cherries, fried tofu, carrot flowers, a huge cherry tomato and steamed broccoli.
Green food coloring was added to the water before I cooked the rice which gave a lovely light green hue. The eyes were cut from white egg sheet and nori. Their noses were black sesame seeds and the mouths cut from nori with scissors. The carrot flowers are the best thing about this bento, in my opinion, because I just learned how to do it! I love them! Learning how to cut the flowers this way was part of what I did on my birthday. A-chan gave a gratifying gasp of amazement when she saw them.
Have a Happy Monday, everyone!

Curry with Chickens
Wow, it's already Friday! I can't believe that the first week of school is over already. Here are some cute chicks to usher in the weekend with my fav recipe - Curry rice. It no longer phases A-chan when I add things to the basic curry recipe. This time I went back to spinach, chopping it very fine in an attempt to get it past the 7 year old radar. When we ate the first meal of the batch (one batch will usually make 3-4 meals for us) she took a few bites before challenging me on the green stuff. "It's spinach," I said. She proceeded to eat the rest with no comments. Can I consider that a spinach victory?
In the bento: Vegetarian curry with two onigiri on top, egg sheet chicks, grapes, plum, steamed green beans and a carrot butterfly.
The egg sheet ovals for the chicks were cut with scissors and placed onto the onigiri with a little bit of curry gravy to hold them in place. Their beaks were cut from carrots and the cheeks were sriracha dabbed on with the end of a toothpick. The little flowers are egg sheet with red sugar dots in the center and they have leaves of fresh parsley.

Giraffes are Cool
Hi there, world! It feels like forever since I last had time to post. Summer was crazy busy and tons of fun with adventures, lots of travel, lots of camps, kittens and my first semester back in school. For A-chan's first day as a second grader she requested a Giraffe bento. (One of her favorite summer memories was getting to feed a giraffe at Zoo Atlanta.) Since I spent part of the summer practicing to perfect egg sheets, I was delighted to be able to use some in the first bento of the new school year!
In the bento: Two onigiri covered with egg sheet, grapes, cheddar cheese blocks, Morningstar Farms soy sausage links, steamed broccoli, pomegranate seeds and clementine wedges.
Mr. Giraffe has soy turkey for his spots, white eggsheet and nori facial details, black sesame seeds for his nose and soba noodles with corn kernals for antennae. The large egg sheets for Mr. Giraffe were loosely wrapped over the onigiri and held in place with the food that was packed around him. The little hearts are cut from white egg sheet with nori hearts on top.
Though bentos were being made during the summer, most of the pictures have been ruminating on my computer without being posted. I was extremely lax about anything online while I focused on studying for school. While I enjoyed my classes immensely I was unprepared for the wild amount of work necessary
in a summer session. I can't wait to get back into the routine of bento making and I'm looking forward to catching up on everything and reconnecting with everyone!

First Day of Summer Camp
Happy Summer! We had a great time being lazy and catching up with friends for our first week of summer break. This week is A-chan's first summer camp of the year at a nearby Nature Center. Since I was pretty sure that lunches would be jumbled around at camp, I packed her bento very tightly with extra lettuce and kept the cuteness to a minimum.
In the bento: Two miniature homemade vegetarian hamburgers, lemon slices, carrot flowers, two onigiri, steamed broccoli, a cherry tomato and two picks of cheddar cheese. On the side is a container of ketchup for the hamburgers.
This was an extremely quick bento to put together. I already had rice made and waiting in the fridge to be microwaved and made into onigiri. The triangular mold made it easy and speedy. The mix for the hamburgers was also waiting in the fridge - I formed them into patties and cooked them in a small pan with a tiny bit of sesame oil.

Caterpillar
Have you ever typed or written a word and had it look completely wrong even though you're sure you know how to spell it? That happened with 'Caterpillar' today. This cute guy was inspired by a caterpillar in the Yum-Yum Bento Box book. It was just so cute! Plus, A-chan is obsessed with caterpillars right now. She has to stop and pet them and save them if they are in danger of being trod upon.
In the bento: Four plain rice balls, fried tofu, grapes, a cherry tomato, checkerboard cucumber slices, a tiny lemon wedge, an orange slice, and baby corn flowers.
For the caterpillar's face I used nori for the eyes and mouth, lemon peel for the nose and gari (pickled ginger) for the cheeks. White sesame seeds help decorate the eyes and black sesame seeds decorate the body. The baby corn flowers have cucumber peel leaves and orange peel centers.
I should have remembered to cut the cherry tomato in two in order to avoid potential eye injuries, but I totally forgot! I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Lunchtime Friends
The tiny onigiri cube army is coming! Run for your lives. Call the Dr. Get out the soy sauce! This morning would have been so much easier if I had remembered to make the onigiri last night. Alas, I made them this morning instead which made the bento take longer to pack. And when I had decided on today's menu I hadn't taken into account that it took 12 cubes to fill in the box. I was thinking 6. Oh well, what's a Tuesday for if not adventure?
In the bento: 12 cube onigiri minis, corn on the cob, a date, raspberries, orange slices, grapes, veggie and tofu stirfry and cheese flowers.
The stifry has broccoli, carrots, tofu, green peas and baby spinach. There are two onigiri bears, two doggies and two kitties. They were formed with the help of an onigiri mould which makes 3 at a time. Their faces were punched or cut from nori and applied with the help of tweezers. My favorites are the kitties, of course!

Time to Plant Yet?
Spring is being confusing this year. The weather won't make up it's mind. It is way too cold to be almost May! Georgia is supposed to be warm and comfy this time of year and instead I'm freezing. I want to start planting. When do I get to play with flowers?
In the bento: Two onigiri with scrambled tofu, purple potato flowers, cherry tomato, pistachios, carrot flower, steamed broccoli and chunks of mango.
The potato flowers are decorated with sesame seeds and have cucumber peel leaves. I used a knife to slice the cucumber peel from the cucumber and then used scissors to cut the leaves. The letters were cut from egg sheet leftover after making the Cupcake Kitty. Have I mentioned lately that I adore my letter cutters? The thought of trying to cut them out by hand sends shivers down my spine.
Making scrambled tofu onigiri is very easy, however since the tofu is colored using tumeric the yellow gets all over the rice when mixing them together. The end result is not as striking compared to using scrambled egg.
