Mustachioed Bento
It seems like a lot of the kids at my daughter's school are obsessed with mustaches. They must be cool. That means A-chan loves mustaches too, of course. Therefore I present the mustachioed bento! I really love how it turned out. Cutting the mustaches out of nori was a lot of fun.
In the bento: Corn on the cob, blackberries, steamed broccoli, black beans, a Morning Star Farms Chik patty, veggie hot dog flowers, half of a cherry tomato and some pan fried potato slices.
I used scissors to cut the mustaches from a sheet of nori. The eyes were cut from provolone cheese and nori. It was very simple to do but it made a huge hit!

Because it's time for Fall
There is a definite chill in the air which means that it's time for Pumpkin flavored everything, warm socks and the 'poing' sound of acorns pelting the car roof. After so many years of making bento lunches some trends have shown up. Fall = Totoro. It has now become an official household tradition that the first fall bento includes Totoro.
In the bento: Totoro onigiri with black sesame seeds, black olives, strawberries, corn on the cob, clementine slices, a huge carrot leaf, steamed edamame and vegetarian hotdogs.
Totoro has black sesame seeds mixed in with the rice for a grayish color. His belly and eyes are of provolone cheese and nori, but his nose was cut from a black olive. The ears were made separately and are affixed to his head with uncooked udon noodles. A-chan said that she though he looked more like a bunny than Totoro, but he was still cute so it's okay.
There was a lot of hidden food in this bento. To get the corn perfect looking I cut off a ragged end but put it underneath Totoro to angle him up a little. Another strawberry and clementine slice were underneath the fruit and more steamed edamame were crammed around under the black olive soot sprites.

Little Bunnies
We are getting back into the swing of things! Bento prep is vastly less complicated when I plan the night before. I review what I want to make - both recipes and characters - and check to make sure I have the ingredients. Being surprised in the morning by not having any egg sheets made is less fun than one might expect. While I can make emergency egg sheets in the morning, I really prefer not to!
In the bento: Two cute rolled sandwiches, raspberries, blackberries, tiny carrot strips, sweet corn on the cob, potato salad and steamed broccoli.
The sammies have shredded cheese and mayo inside and are held together with toothpicks. Even though the toothpicks were pretty obvious, A-chan was warned about them as we drove on the way to school. The ears and mouths were cut from egg sheets and the other details from nori.
A-chan is enjoying her new dessert-themed picks that we purchased in San Francisco this summer. They are cute and handy so I'm loving them too.

Lucy!
It's time to go back to school again. And that means bentos every day! We had a lovely summer with lots of travel but not many chances to play with food. I'm very excited about all the bentos that will be created this school year. A-chan requested a complicated charaben for the first day of school. Surprise, surprise - it's another Fairytail bento. It took six different egg sheets to make Lucy. My bento skills got a little rusty over the summer so there isn't as much detail as I would prefer.
In the bento: Sushi rice with egg sheet and nori character, carrot flowers, corn on the cob, a cherry tomato, steamed broccoli, fried tofu, raspberries and blackberries.

Weekend Fun Bentos
This past weekend was amazing. We had an incredible time at Anime Weekend Atlanta. Then we went on to participate in the Color Run 5k with A-chan's godparents. And there was a Fall Festival after lunch at The Flying Biscuit. Eating lunch while covered in colors was just a bit strange but also kind of fun.
These bentos were for our lunch at AWA on Friday. Inari zushi are easy to make and quick to pop into bentos when I'm in a hurry. I wanted A-chan's to be cute. I wanted mine to be more elegant. There were plenty of egg sheets left over from making Vash the Stampede the day before so I used them for fans and flowers. Everything in this bento was about being quick to make and easy to assemble.
In the bento: Inari zushi, corn on the cob, grapes, black plum slices, carrot flowers, baby tomatoes and cream cheese soy turkey rolls.
The bunny faces were cut from provolone. The butterflies were punched from nori with one of my fav nori punches. It was bought at Michael's and I love it! I use it all the time on bentos for myself.

Tsukune Dinner Bentos
This blog was originally named because we are a vegetarian family. Despite the belief here in the west that Japanese food is synonymous with vegetarianism, that is so far from the reality of daily cuisine in Japan. (More on this subject below...) I am an anarchist for combining my love of Japanese food and bento making with my life of vegetarianism! Many times I take traditional Japanese recipes and 'fake them up' into vegetarian versions that I can make quickly and easily at home.
Tsukune patties are one of our favorite of these anarchized recipes. And yes, I realize that 'anarchized' isn't actually a word but I like it so I'm going to use it anyway. Tsukune in Japan are made from ground chicken, usually served on a skewer. Mine are made from firm tofu, fried onion paste, flour, panko and water. Totally not traditional Japanese cuisine but oh so yummy! A-chan prefers hers with ketchup while I eat mine drenched in mayo and sriracha. I will post the recipe soon.
In the bento: Rice with black sesame seeds, carrot flowers, steamed broccoli, corn on the cob, vegetarian tsukune patties, an apple bunny for A-chan and a checkered apple for me. My bento had some broccoli sprouts scattered around while A-chan refused to have any in hers.
While I want to make dinner bentos as lovely as these every time, I admit that they aren't always so picture worthy. Somehow I'm only organized enough to make pretty food in the mornings and by afternoon I'm throwing food into bento boxes and hoping I'll get us to dance class on time.
(Vegetarianism in Japan continued...) Like my grandparents who used to think that life will end if one doesn't flavor food with meat, most Japanese consider a meal to be incomplete without some form of meat. There is more in common between the South and Japan than most people think! The idea of vegetarianism is not well understood in either place, though that is slowly changing. I've been told that it is as difficult to find vegetarian food in Japan as it is to get a veggie meal at a BBQ joint - almost impossible unless you want to eat plain bread. A meal without meat seems to equate to hardship and unhappiness in Japan, which leads to a very different view of food. Below are some links about this that are fun to read and occasionally eye-opening.

Frozen T-day Leftovers Bento
Getting into the swing of Christmas with Thanksgiving leftovers. Cinnamoroll is made from a veggie sausage roll that was leftover on T-day and frozen for use in bentos. There is also sweet potato casserole and corn on the cob that were frozen. I love using pomegranate for holly berries. It's one of my favorite things about Pomegranate besides the yum factor.
In the bento: Veggie sausage roll, carrot slices, cucumber slices and holly leaves, pomegranate seeds, sweet potato casserole, a checkered apple, carrot flowers and corn on the cob.
Cinnamoroll's ears were cut from Provolone cheese. Her eyes and mouth were nori and her checks were cut from pieces of gari.
Underneath the bento is one of the cloth napkins that we tie dyed for Thanksgiving dinner. (It's a tradition to make cloth napkins for T-day every year!) There are also some chestnuts on the side. I haven't been brave enough to try and cook them yet, so for now they are just being decorative. The lady at the grocery store was scandalized that I only bought 3 of them. She gave me a good ten minute lecture on how to cook them and made me promise to buy more next time. (Apparently they take a loooong time to cook and it's a waste of effort to only cook 3. Now I know!)

What do you mean it's Monday?
I love how expressive faces can be on bento characters. This rabbit's face expresses exactly how I feel. How can it be Monday again already? I will conquer the Monday, mwahahaha! A-chan made sure to notify me that the ears would get squished when I put on the lid, but I laid them flat on top of the veggies and fruit to fix that problem.
In the bento: Cheese sandwich, strawberries, kiwi, blackberries, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli steamed cauliflower and carrot bunnies.
The bunny's ears were cut from the heel of the bread and provolone cheese. His mouth is another piece of bread cut in a circle with an x of nori on top. It is held to the sandwich underneath with a pink pick. The white parts of the eyes were cut from (you guessed it) provolone cheese. The green parts are zucchini peel and of course the black is nori! The little carrot bunnies have mouths cut from tiny slivers of zucchini peel.
I'm experimenting with using more veggies to decorate with instead of nori. It helps to use up some of the scraps that are created from making the charaben, so it feels better to me. Plus it adds more color which is always a good thing! The zucchini bits used in this bento were saved from the scraps that I cut out from another bento. They were saved in an airtight container in the fridge.

Giraffes are Cool
Hi there, world! It feels like forever since I last had time to post. Summer was crazy busy and tons of fun with adventures, lots of travel, lots of camps, kittens and my first semester back in school. For A-chan's first day as a second grader she requested a Giraffe bento. (One of her favorite summer memories was getting to feed a giraffe at Zoo Atlanta.) Since I spent part of the summer practicing to perfect egg sheets, I was delighted to be able to use some in the first bento of the new school year!
In the bento: Two onigiri covered with egg sheet, grapes, cheddar cheese blocks, Morningstar Farms soy sausage links, steamed broccoli, pomegranate seeds and clementine wedges.
Mr. Giraffe has soy turkey for his spots, white eggsheet and nori facial details, black sesame seeds for his nose and soba noodles with corn kernals for antennae. The large egg sheets for Mr. Giraffe were loosely wrapped over the onigiri and held in place with the food that was packed around him. The little hearts are cut from white egg sheet with nori hearts on top.
Though bentos were being made during the summer, most of the pictures have been ruminating on my computer without being posted. I was extremely lax about anything online while I focused on studying for school. While I enjoyed my classes immensely I was unprepared for the wild amount of work necessary
in a summer session. I can't wait to get back into the routine of bento making and I'm looking forward to catching up on everything and reconnecting with everyone!

Acorn Sammies
Whew! I am so happy to be back to posting. My sickness is finally over and I am human again with only a little bit of coughing and no fever :) Last week was rough. This week is exciting though - today is my first day of school! And we're going to San Jose, CA later in the week. I would love suggestions about things to do while we're out that way.
In the bento: Acorn sandwiches filled with peanut butter and sugar sprinkles, blueberries on picks, an apple bunny, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli and a container of carrot hearts.
The acorn sammies were cut with a Wilton cookie cutter. Their cute caps were cut from the heel of the loaf and I used scissors to shape them to the right size. My carrot peeler was dirty this morning (I have a huge backlog of cleaning to attend to from being sick all last week) so I cut slices without peeling the carrot and then used a tiny heart shaped cutter to cut from the centers. The rest of the carrot got scooped up to go into the compost, peel and all.
Happy Monday, everyone!

Dressed Up Sammies
One of the most fun ways to eat carrots is slurping up carrot ribbons. They are still a bit crisp but also long and curly. I use the carrot peeler that my Mom had in her kitchen when I was growing up. Every time I do, I give a little sigh of thanks that she gave it to me. It's one of my all time favorite kitchen tools and if it were ever lost I would be desolate.
In the bento: Carrot ribbons in a silicone container, steamed broccoli, half a cherry tomato, corn on the cob, grapes and pear slices are in one tier. The top tier has two soy turkey and cheese sammies and the other half of the cherry tomato.
The sammies are pretty basic but a provolone cheese flower and green onion wrapping makes them dressy and elegant. The green onions were plopped into boiling water for 3 minutes, drained and dried before being cut in two lengthwise and knotted around the sandwiches. The boiling made them pliable and shiny at the same time!

Bear with a Bow Tie
Today's bento has several of my favorite Southern staple foods, though not all can make an appearance in a bento. Gravy, in particular, is not suited for bento lunches. A-chan's first words upon seeing the bento this morning were, "The bear and the raspberry are going to get squished." Yes, she has definitely started catching onto my bento packing problems! Luckily I was able to rearrange things a bit so that neither the bear or the berry got 'squished' when I put the lid on. It was a near thing, though.
In the bento: A raspberry, a roll, two Morningstar Farms chik nuggets, grapes on a pick, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli, orange slices, a container of black eyed peas and pan-fried potato stars and bear.
Mr. Bear was cut from a slice of raw potato, as were the stars. They were then pan fried with a tiny bit of olive oil. Once they cooled I was able to put the nori and cheese facial details, ketchup cheeks and dapper cucumber bow tie on Mr. Bear. In the background is a container of ketchup to go with the chik nuggets. Not shown was another container with a little bit of spreadable butter to go on the roll.

Lunchtime Friends
The tiny onigiri cube army is coming! Run for your lives. Call the Dr. Get out the soy sauce! This morning would have been so much easier if I had remembered to make the onigiri last night. Alas, I made them this morning instead which made the bento take longer to pack. And when I had decided on today's menu I hadn't taken into account that it took 12 cubes to fill in the box. I was thinking 6. Oh well, what's a Tuesday for if not adventure?
In the bento: 12 cube onigiri minis, corn on the cob, a date, raspberries, orange slices, grapes, veggie and tofu stirfry and cheese flowers.
The stifry has broccoli, carrots, tofu, green peas and baby spinach. There are two onigiri bears, two doggies and two kitties. They were formed with the help of an onigiri mould which makes 3 at a time. Their faces were punched or cut from nori and applied with the help of tweezers. My favorites are the kitties, of course!

Just a Little Mouse
This little mouse is full of curry. Even healthier than normal vegetarian Japanese curry to be precise. I'm very proud of this particular curry because I managed to sneak baby spinach into it by cutting the spinach into fine strips. I don't think A-chan noticed. She certainly ate every bite last night so I'm considering this another triumph for nutritious eating! So far I've managed to sneak kabocha, cauliflower, zucchini and spinach into our curry. Only one at a time, though. The next challenge is to add two or more and see if she balks, hehe. I have been enjoying these small changes to our regular recipes. Even though they are not large portions of extra vegetables, my philosophy is better some than none. We are eating a little healthier every day!
In the bento: Bread and curry rolls, carrot flowers, black olives, corn on the cob, a huge strawberry and steamed broccoli.
My favorite parts of the mouse are the corn kernel earrings. Her face was made with provolone cheese, nori, ketchup cheeks and a pick for the nose. The large carrot flowers were decorated with black sesame seeds, the small flowers have either a sugar dot or a tiny provolone cheese circle.
The filled bread rolls are inspired by Bentolicious. Lia has a fantastic tutorial on these cute bento sandwiches!

Butterfly Fans
Ahhh, the glories of Spring! Everywhere we look there are butterflies and flowers. And the fruit, don't forget all the delicious incredible spring fruit. There is a farm nearby that allows people to come and pick huge buckets of strawberries. Soon, very soon, we will be in strawberry ecstasy. But until then I decided to stick with butterflies, flowers and an apple bunny.
In the bento: Two peanut butter and sugar sprinkle sandwiches with fan decorations, sesame carrots, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli, carrot flower petals, steamed sugar snap peas, an apple bunny and mango chunks that are hiding behind the apple. (You can see a hint of the hiding mango because it has the circular pick stuck into it.)
The fan shapes were cut from provolone cheese, the butterflies were cut from nori, the tiny flowers are carrots with snap pea leaves and sugar dots to add some color. I would love to be able to say that I had cut the butterflies by hand, but alas I cannot make that claim. The source of their magnificence is a scrapbook cutter that I purchased at Michael's the other day. Though I attempted to refrain from the purchase, my bento greed won out!
A-chan never gets peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for school. Not only is there too much sugar in jelly but it has a potential for incredible messes. Instead I use sugar sprinkles (normally used on cookies, cupcakes, etc.) because they give the hint of sweetness that she loves without the mess or the sugar crash.

Hot Dog Ballerinas
For child-size mouths eating a hot dog in a bun can be a challenge. Cutting them into hot dog and bun rounds is one of my favorite ways of making it a little easier. Instead of applying ketchup liberally to the bun like I normally would, there is instead a dipping container. I gave them cute little faces out of nori but didn't try to make them look like anything in particular. A-chan dubbed them ballerinas and pointed out how the bun parts looked like raised arms. I loved it!
In the bento: Vegetarian hot dog and bun rounds, a halved cherry tomato, an orange wedge, blackberries, steamed broccoli, corn on the cob and cheddar cubes on musical picks.
The entire hot dog would not fit into the bento without getting smooshed so the remainder became part of my lunch.

Girl Scouts Bento
A friend of mine who is a Girl Scout troupe leader here in town asked me to come and talk about bentos at their meeting last night. The girls are doing world studies and this week's theme was Japan. I took along a lot of show and tell items including this bento. It was a lot of fun! The girls were a lot more interested than I initially thought they would be. They made fantastic observations and had great questions for me. We used the cling film method of onigiri making to let each of the girls make their own. Most made ball shapes but some made hearts. I took along some nori punches and nori sheets so that they could each decorate their onigiri with faces.
In the bento: Two onigiri with cucumber decoration, carrot ribbons, grapes, a corn croquette, a cherry tomato, two cucumber slices and two veggie hot dog flowers with green pea centers.
The 100 year celebration logo was carved out of cucumber with an exacto knife. It's a bit rough around the edges but I'm pretty proud of it for a free-hand cutting that I've never done before! It's held onto the onigiri with a tiny bit of uncooked somen noodle - one end poked into the cucumber and the other into the rice. The numbers were cut from provolone cheese and the letters cut from more cucumber peel with my letter cutters. This bento also features a soy sauce bottle that it actually inside the box! The cute little pink rabbit bottle is from a set that was in my Christmas stocking.

Randomness
I can't believe that it's already time for spring break! I'm planning what A-chan and I are going to do next week. In the meantime I'm delving into the world of statistics and physics - a true adventure. This bento was rather random, a collection of leftover items that I pulled from the fridge without a plan in mind. It seemed to work out okay, though that might be attributed to the implied theme imparted by the use of Pokemon picks.
In the bento: Two potato and onion pierogies, steamed broccoli, vegetarian hot dog pieces, green peas, nectarine slices, orange wedges, provolone cheese stars and a half slice of corn on the cob.
On the side I managed to photograph the elusive ketchup cup in action. I rarely remember to put the accessories we use daily into the pictures that I take. I'm not sure how this one happened. It is filled not quite to the top with ketchup to dip the hotdog pieces into.

Tic Tac Toe
Whoa! A bento post on a Saturday? Yep. I'm feeling guilty that I haven't had time to post the last two days so I decided to post today. What have I been doing that I've been too busy to make the all-important bento post? There is a huge bellydance event coming up next weekend where I'm performing with an awesome group of women. So rehearsals are in full swing, plus I'm a staff member helping to pull off this incredible weekend of dance and a tiny bit of panic has started to set in. Then there's the math test next week. If I'm on the computer right now it's almost guaranteed that I'm practicing math. Wheee!
In the bento: Rice with a nori, pea and carrot tic tac toe board, one Morningstar Farms chik nugget cut in half, a half slice of corn on the cob, raspberries, steamed broccoli and two grapes on a pick.
I set up the nori game grid before A-chan came to see her bento that morning. Then gave her the carrot x's and we played. It was a fun way to start the morning and it didn't take very long! She was thrilled that she got to play a part in decorating her bento.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Pink Panther
A-chan is a huge fan of the Pink Panther cartoon. I haven't determined whether it is because of all the pink, which is her favorite color, or because it's funny. Today's bento going was to be Pink Panther themed no matter what. The only question was what method to use. I decided upon an artistic challenge to balance out all the math study I've been doing. Instead of using egg sheets I wanted to try an icing painting which seemed like fun!
In the bento: Miniature eggo pancakes, peach slices, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli, huge black olive slices and a container of tiny carrot hearts.
Using store bought icing I mixed three variations of pink. The lighter pink was made by mixing together some pink strawberry flavored icing and some regular white vanilla icing. The middle pink is the strawberry icing while I mixed some red food coloring with more strawberry icing to deepen the shade for the darker pink.
Next I wrapped and taped three henna cones, two of which can be seen in the background, filled them with the icing and proceeded to 'paint' the pancake. Small cuts of nori became eyebrows, eyelid and whiskers. I am completely delighted with the way he turned out! A-chan was thrilled. I don't think I've surprised her that well in ages.
Thank you all so much for the kind thoughts and support! I appreciate it very much. You guys are the best! And your sweet comments help me feel a little braver :)
